Getting The Birthday Gift You Always Wanted

Author: Barry Mcgee

Did you ever have a birthday where you wished and wished for a certain gift, only to not get it?

It's not an unusual tale. Many of us would tear through the gifts on our birthday, certain this box or that one held the prized item we wanted so dearly. And when the final gift was unwrapped, we still loved what we got, but would have traded it all in for that one item we had dreamt about night after night.

In some respects, A Christmas Story told the tale all too well. Sure it was Christmas (that's why they didn't call it "A Birthday Story"). But the story of little Ralphie Parker and his obsessive desire for a "Red Ryder carbine-action, 200 shot Range Model air rifle BB gun with compass in the stock and a think which tells time," touches us all.

We always knew the drill, too. We'd make our list out ahead of time and made sure mom and dad knew what we wanted for our birthday. After all, they were the ones who would do the inviting and clue our friend's parents in on what to give us.

There was a method to the madness, too. We knew that we couldn't ask for something too extravagant from friends. A new bicycle, for example, had to come from a relative. So we would scale our requests to cover all the bases - the inexpensive games for the casual friends, the cool toys from friends who knew they would be invited over to play with them, and the more pricey items that grandparents could be convinced to buy instead of clothing.

Inevitably, someone wouldn't follow the suggested list and the most prized toy wouldn't arrive on that fateful birthday we had been waiting all year for. And we'd carry that disappoint with us well into our adulthood, pledging to ourselves that our children would never have to experience that kind of disappointment in their lives (until they asked for a Wii last Christmas, that is).

But there is an equalizer these days to any birthday disappointments you may have had in your youth. It's called eBay. Yes, if you wanted it once upon a time, chances are good that you can get it on eBay.

Want a Red Ryder BB Gun? You can have one. How about a Vintage Marx Big Bruiser Tow Truck from the mid-1960s? Or a GI Joe Sea Sled with frogman? A bit younger and still wanting to make up for birthday shortcomings? You can get a Pound Puppy of your choice, a Stretch Armstrong that's still filled with the goo that makes him stretch, and any My Little Pony you could imagine, including the primo pink corral and barn for them to live in.

Pretty cool, huh? Any toy you never got for your birthday is probably on eBay. If it's not there today, then someone will put there tomorrow, next week or next month.

And when it arrives in your home ready to play with, you come full circle, my friend. You'll finally have the birthday gift you'd always dreamed of. Of course, your therapist may not be as pleased about this as you are.
